Source 124 states "Thomas B. Massey. born about 1825, married first Catherine Massey on February 28, 1853, in Raleigh County. Catherine's parents were William Massey Sr. and Martha Lafferty. Thomas married second Mary Vance, daughter of William Vance and Nancy Margaret Toler." Currently we doubt that Catherine's parents were William Massey Sr. and Martha Lafferty.
The following information, based on source 169 ,provides the following:
"Massey, Catherine ___ to Thomas, Massey ___ 25 Feb 1853" (___ indicate parents information and ages of bride and groom are not available).
Next is "Massey, Catherine 21 Logan d/o William/Martha to Hiram WIlls 32 Grayson, VA s/o William/Sarah 30 Mar 1854".
As it is possbile that the above mentioned Catherine Massey is the same person, the 1860 census notes Thomas Massey with Catherine Massey and John H. Massey (son) and Catherine's age being 23. In order for these Catherine Massey's to be the same person, it appears that Catherine would have had to married Thomas Massey, divorced Thomas Massey and married Hiram Wills (all in the course of 13 months) then left Hiram Wills and went back to Thomas Massey and have a child by 1860, not to mention the age discrepency. We do not believe this to be likely. |
